What a single figure will not tell you

Every reading that arrives is kept. Strung together, those readings make a curve, and a curve tells you what a number never will.

Choosing the period

Above the chart you pick the time window: the day, the week, the month, or dates you type in yourself. You can also zoom straight into the chart by dragging over a range, then step back out.

The right period depends on the question. To check the workshop warmed up this morning: the day. To understand why a batch dried badly: the month. To compare two winters: the year.

Overlaying two readings

Several curves can share one chart. That is where it gets interesting: kiln humidity against outdoor temperature, and you see at once whether the kiln is at the mercy of the weather. Or the planer's consumption against the extraction's running hours, and you see what is turning for nothing.

A gap in the curve is not a value of zero. It is an absence of reading: sleeping sensor, broken link, flat battery. Never read a blank as cold, or as a stoppage. The blank says "I don't know".

Getting the figures out

The readings for a period can be exported to a spreadsheet file. That is what Farida does when a customer asks for proof that their batch was dried properly: one period, one sensor, one file, attached to the job. It is called traceability, and it beats somebody's word.

How long is it kept?

The history is kept for a long time, and the exact duration is written into your service contract. Older readings are gradually summarised, an hourly average rather than every minute, so that curves stay quick to draw. Alarms, by contrast, are kept in full.

In closing

A value says where you are, a curve says where you are going. It is the slope that lets you act before the alarm, and that is why the history is kept.
