Timber keeps moving

An oak board that leaves the kiln too damp carries on drying at the customer's house. It shrinks, it cups, the cabinet door stops closing. The fault does not show up in the workshop: it shows up three months later, in somebody's living room. You rebuild the piece, you pay for the fitting a second time, and you still don't know what went wrong.

A humidity sensor in the kiln changes that. It measures every few minutes, day and night, Sundays included. If the ventilation gives up on a Friday evening, you know on the Friday evening, not on Monday morning in front of a ruined batch.

Cold chain, workshop, energy

The principle is the same everywhere. A cold room that warms up overnight spoils its stock in silence. A workshop at 6 °C on a winter morning means glue that won't set and varnish that goes cloudy. A machine drawing a third more current than it did six months ago is a machine wearing out, and it will fail on your busiest day.

A sensor doesn't earn you money: it stops you losing some. It turns an expensive nasty surprise into a message received in time. That is its whole job.

Four things, no more. The humidity of the timber kiln. The temperature of the main workshop. Whether the chip extraction is running or stopped. The electricity drawn by the large machines. They started small and added as they went, which is the right way to do it.
