The list, then the message
The central list shows what has arrived, most recent at the top. An unread message appears in bold. Click it once: it opens beside the list, and is marked as read.
If you would rather read your messages full width, the display icon at the top right switches between preview beside, preview below, and message alone. On a small screen, the message alone is more comfortable.
Conversations or separate messages
By default a message and all its replies are grouped into a single line: this is the conversation. The small arrow unfolds the thread and shows the replies in order. It is the comfortable mode when an exchange runs a fortnight.
If you would rather see every message on its own line, the display is changed in the mail settings. Both modes show the same messages; only the grouping differs.
Marking, sorting, finding again
A right click on a message opens the action menu: mark it unread to deal with later, add a flag, move it, tag it, print it, delete it.
The sort icon, top right of the list, orders by date, by sender, by subject, or brings unread messages and those carrying an attachment to the top. A second click reverses the order.
The paperclip beside the subject announces an attachment. Clicking its name displays it without downloading: handy for checking that a drawing is the right one before saving it.
In closing
Reading your mail needs no particular method, except this one: handle a message once. Read it, decide, file or delete it, rather than reopening it three times a day.
